Rest, Martha.

Because sometimes, I need to be reminded that the Lord just wants to spend time with me.

But. There. Is. So. Much. To. Do. Ya know?

In this passage of scripture, Martha is cleaning and preparing for Jesus’ arrival. When He gets there, she says to Him, “Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!”

I can hear myself in her response sometimes. Like, Jesus, are you serious! Come on! Do you see how hard I am working? (Insert pat on my back please). Don’t you see what I’m doing & why I’m weary?

And this is what He says back to Martha: “Martha, Martha … you are worried and upset about many things, but only one thing is needed. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.”

Can you see yourself in Martha sometimes? Our hands are tired, our minds are going 80 miles a minute & we are weary. We’ve become so focused on the task, we have forgotten the purpose.

We remember to do but we forget how to just be. And therefore, rest becomes a long lost friend.

But Jesus, in His compassion and ever-flowing kindness, reminds us that He just wants to spend time with us. He honors hard work and He says preparation is wise but if we spend our time always preparing for the guest of Honor rather than being with the guest of Honor, how will we come to know Him?

May we be a little more like Mary today. And this week, especially as the work piles in our laps. Let’s remember the reason we are created: to get to know our Creator!

Your dishes will be there. Your work will not catch fire. Your kids can play by themselves. Your friends can see you tomorrow. And your Jesus? He will always be there but this time with Him is the one thing in your life that will change all your tomorrows.

Rest, Martha. It’s okay to breathe ????
