Can I tell you something that I am wildly, incredibly thankful for?
The fact that Jesus accepts us for EXACTLY who we are while loving us and pushing us towards the people He knows we were called to be.
It’s His sovereignty. It’s His magnificence. It’s the crazy, awe-inspiring way that He meets us, boots on and hands extended, as we are knee-deep in quicksand while STILL, even in that very moment, claiming us for the creation that He sees within.
I believe we have such a hard time grasping this concept because we are good at being either or, if you know what I mean. We can be good at being there for someone when they’ve made a bad decision or when they feel as though they are drowning, but our encouragement is often short-sided. It says “you can get through this”, while Jesus speaks to that person and says “In my eyes, you are already victorious. Take heart, keep swimming and press on so that you may see and experience the good things I have planned for you.”
Or we can easily view someone’s potential and dream alongside them when the mountaintop is near in sight or at least when they are going in the right direction. But what about the prodigal son? What about our friend who has made the same mistake over and over and over again, despite the fact that she knows the consequences she will face? Do we still see his/her potential?
OR BETTER YET, what about us?!? How do we treat ourselves? Do we look beyond our current moment, emotion or circumstance and claim our future based on what we know to be true? Or do we so easily fall prey to letting the present hardship consume us, making us think that just because there is fog in the air now, that there are not great things on the horizon?
Friends, we have GOT to be better about this. For ourselves, for our friends, for our family but most of all, for our Savior. Potential is wired through possibility. And guess who the King of possibility is?
You guessed it, Jesus!
Do you want to know why He does not doubt your resilience, question your worth or fret over your future?
Because He is assured of the promises that He has spoken over your life and His big picture is captioned, “LOVE”.
Because even when you put so many things before Him, He will always put you first.
And His plans will always be to prosper you and not to harm you.
He will always use everything for the good in your life, whether that be down the road or in your present circumstance.
He speaks to the deepest part of your soul, retreating back to when He weaved each intricate fiber and the parts that ache or doubt or wither or fear or fall back, He continually whispers, “I made you for more.”
I want to be more like Jesus so desperately in this way.
May we stop being so quick to assume, so quick to judge, so quick to give up on the beauty that we seek to find in others.
May we walk around graciously pouring out insane amounts of love and keep the labels to ourselves. OR may we shower ourselves with love and stop letting the labels culture throws on us stick, as though they were our truth.
May we decide to look beyond someone’s mistake, or our own, and speak to their potential.
May we remind ourselves and others that our future is good and it is strong and it is secure and it is joyful and it is ours to behold. Despite ourselves, His grace remains and it is sufficient in our weakness.
May we stop settling for being short-sided and not holding ourselves accountable to refocusing and taking a higher vantage point.
And you know what’s funny about this? When you speak to someone’s potential or your own, they/you often take a step towards that brighter future. The more you believe that He is for you, the less you worry that life is against you.
Because you know He is enough.
Friend, your potential is ENORMOUS. It’s absolutely huge. You are swimming in possibility. The opportunity around you is outrageous. The difference you can make is incredible.
All because of Him.
Where the creator has put “Limitless”, you do not get to put “Limited”. Where He has put “hopeful”, you do not get to put “hopeless”. Like, that’s not a thing! What He has said about you, and all His children, stands. It remains. Period.
Tap into that! Let go of the limitations you strapped on your back and trust the potential He created within—YOU. WERE. MADE. FOR. GREAT. THINGS.
“Now to Him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us.” -Ephesians 3:20
“I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in his holy people.” -Ephesians 1:18
