Have you ever noticed how your world can start feeling smaller without anything around you actually changing?
The same house. The same job. The same relationships. The same routines.
And yet somehow, your joy feels smaller. Your courage feels smaller. Your capacity to love feels smaller. Even your faith can begin to feel smaller.
Most of the time, it isn’t because of one catastrophic event. It happens because our hearts slowly begin adapting to fear instead of faith.
We start taking disappointment personally. We assume the worst before asking questions. We carry responsibilities God never asked us to carry. We replay conversations, compare our lives, protect ourselves from being hurt again, and before long, we don’t just have smaller expectations—we have smaller hearts.
But that’s never been the invitation of Jesus.
When Jesus said, “I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly” (John 10:10), He wasn’t simply talking about eternity. He was describing a way of living NOW—a life marked by freedom instead of fear, trust instead of control, love instead of self-protection, and hope instead of cynicism.
One of the enemy’s greatest strategies isn’t always convincing us to walk away from God. Sometimes it’s convincing us to quietly settle for a life that’s smaller than the one Jesus is inviting us into.
So ask yourself: What has been making my world feel smaller lately?
Is it comparison? Hurry? Offense? The need to control every outcome? Fear of disappointing people? Carrying burdens that belong to God alone?
Whatever it is, you will want to “try harder.” Don’t! Bring it to Jesus. Let Him breathe life + space back into your heart + world!
Every time you choose trust over fear, forgiveness over resentment, gratitude over comparison, or presence over hurry, your heart becomes a little more free.
Following Jesus isn’t about becoming more restricted—it’s the opposite! It’s about becoming more ALIVE—more free to love, more free to notice God’s presence, and more free to become the person He created you to be. Hands wide open + a heart that sees.
Maybe abundant life doesn’t begin when your circumstances change
