Fight to stay soft.

Most of us don’t wake up one morning and decide to become cynical.
We just get tired of being disappointed.

We pray for something that still doesn’t change. We show up for someone who doesn’t show up for us. We watch something unfold differently than we begged God for it to. And somewhere along the way, our hearts learn how to BRACE.

Don’t expect too much. Don’t get your hopes up. Don’t care that much again.

But staying soft after life has given us reasons to harden is not weakness. It’s the opposite. It takes tremendous strength.

It takes strength to forgive without pretending it didn’t hurt, to hope without demanding an outcome, to remain generous when generosity isn’t returned, and to let wisdom give us boundaries without letting fear build walls.

Anyone can become guarded after disappointment. Our flesh knows how to protect itself.

But remaining tender? That requires the Spirit.

Jesus showed us a strength that looked nothing like self-protection. He was betrayed without becoming bitter. Misunderstood without becoming defensive. Rejected without becoming cruel. He confronted what was wrong and still moved toward people with compassion.

His tenderness wasn’t the absence of strength. It was evidence of it.

Pain will always offer to disciple us. The enemy will use it to tell us to trust less, risk less + hope less—to convince us that becoming harder means becoming wiser.

But the fruit of the Spirit tells a different story.

Love can survive disappointment.
Joy can coexist with grief.
Peace does not require certainty.
Kindness does not make us foolish.

So yes, we pray for God to change the thing. Heal it. Restore it. Bring the answer. MAKE A WAY.

But underneath that prayer, maybe there’s an even braver one:
Jesus, don’t let what hurt us become what leads us. Make us wiser without making us colder. Give us boundaries without bitterness. Don’t let what broke our hearts convince us that having a heart was the problem.

One of the greatest evidences that God carried us through the fire isn’t that we came out untouched.
It’s that we came out TENDER.

Fight to stay soft. This world desperately needs it 🤍
