Is it just me, or does it feel like the heavy has been coming in DROVES lately?
One thing happens, and before your heart figures out what to do with that, there’s another text. Another phone call. Another headline. Another person you love walking through something you’d give anything to fix.
And then you’re unloading the dishwasher, answering emails, packing lunches, sitting in carpool, trying to be present with the people right in front of you…while carrying things that are breaking your heart.
It’s a LOT to be a human who cares.
I’ve been asking Jesus: How do we stay soft without becoming swallowed by everything we feel?
Because I don’t want a hard world to make me hard. But I also know I cannot carry this much.
Maybe THAT is the invitation. I was never supposed to. None of us are.
Jesus was deeply moved by suffering. He wept. He stopped. He touched. He noticed.
But He knew where the weight belonged.
So we pray. REALLY pray.
We hand Jesus the name, diagnosis, situation, the thing we cannot stop thinking about. Not because prayer is what we do when there’s “nothing else we can do,” but because prayer brings real need before a real God who still moves.
And then we get up and we love how we can.
We send the venmo. Call the friend. Sit beside somebody falling apart. Take the kids. Drop off the coffee. Give generously. Notice who needs you. It doesn’t change everything but it does shift the weight + lift our heads.
We cannot do EVERYTHING.
But by God’s grace, we can always do something with the love He has given us.
Maybe serving is one of God’s sweetest antidotes to hopelessness because it moves our eyes from everything we cannot fix to: Who can I love right here?
Yes, the heavy is coming in droves.
BUT so is mercy. So is kindness. So is the Church showing up. So is the faithfulness of God.
And hope still gets to be LOUDER.
Maybe the posture we need is the combination of these two:
“Share each other’s burdens and in this way obey the law of Christ.“ —Galatians 6:2
“Give all your worries and cares to God, for he cares about you.” —1 Peter 5:7
Carry with people. Cast it all on Jesus.
