When you survey your responses to feedback or reflect on your tendency to get defensive, would you say that you are teachable?
I know you want to be teachable—I do too. But getting to the crux of it, do we actually want to be trained, or do we just want to be affirmed?
Because if I’m honest, I feel that tension. I want to grow. I want to listen to the Spirit and receive healthy feedback. And yet, when it comes, I can feel that instinct rise up—the urge to self-protect, justify, or explain. It’s subtle, but it’s there.
Scripture speaks so clearly here.
Proverbs 19:8 tells us this: “The one who gets wisdom loves life; the one who cherishes understanding will soon prosper.”
Not the one who wants to feel good but the one who loves life—aka is willing to forgo the feeling good to truly experience His good.
Over and over, we see that God doesn’t build His people through constant affirmation—He forms them through refinement. David was confronted and humbled. Peter was corrected and restored. Their willingness to stay open is what allowed God to transform them.
Being teachable doesn’t mean you agree with everything someone says. It means you stay open enough for God to use anything He wants.
So maybe today, instead of rushing past the discomfort or replaying the conversation trying to prove your point, you slow down. You bring it to the Lord before you bring it to anyone else. You ask Him to gently show you what’s yours to receive, and what isn’t, and you trust Him enough to sit with whatever He reveals. Maybe it looks like asking a follow-up question instead of shutting down, or choosing silence when you’d rather defend, or circling back with humility instead of letting distance grow.
It won’t always feel natural—in fact, it rarely will—but over time, it will become forming. It will feel GOOD to work that muscle, receive truth and not view it as rejection, and to know that you’re allowing yourself to be LED 🤍
