The cost of always being connected

on March 18, 2026

It’s wild how something that feels so normal can be quietly forming us so deeply.

Constant connection doesn’t just fill our time—it forms our hearts. Because whatever consistently captures your attention slowly catechizes your soul.
And most of it happens beneath the surface—quietly, gradually, without permission.

The constant stream of news teaches your heart the world is unsafe. Comparison teaches your heart you’re behind. Productivity teaches your heart rest is irresponsible. Endless input teaches your heart silence is uncomfortable.

And before you even realize it, you’re not just consuming content—you’re being SHAPED by it.

Scripture reminds us, “Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” (Matthew 6:21) In other words, your attention is not neutral—it is directional.

But here’s what we rarely talk about: the cost of always being connected isn’t just distraction—it’s disconnection.

Disconnection from your body, the people in front of you, and the prompting of the Holy Spirit. God rarely competes with noise—He speaks in whispers, nudges, and stillness.

When our minds are constantly filled, we don’t lose ACCESS to God—we lose the awareness to NOTICE Him. We start to call Him silent when really… we’ve just been crowded.

We’ve learned to override the very signals meant to guide us—pushing past fatigue, ignoring margin, expanding capacity when our bodies are asking us to slow down.

But your body isn’t working against you. It’s advocating for you—telling you the truth your mind is trying to outrun.

Your need for rest is not weakness. Your desire for quiet is not laziness. Your longing to step away is not indulgence—it’s invitation.

Discernment doesn’t grow in noise—it grows in stillness. And presence is where love takes root.

So maybe the question isn’t just “What am I consuming?” but, “What is this forming in me?”

And maybe just as important—what is my body trying to tell me that I keep dismissing?

Because when you finally listen—when you create margin, when you step away—you don’t lose your life… you return to it.
