Some of us are REALLY good at thinking about everything except what actually needs our attention.
We’ll replay a conversation for 20 minutes, mentally reorganize our week while brushing our teeth, or reach for our phones the second we’re alone with our thoughts.
We’ll research things that don’t need researching, prepare for conversations that haven’t happened, and convince ourselves that thinking through every possible outcome will finally make us feel better.
And sometimes? We genuinely have a lot on our plates.
But sometimes (a lot of times), a busy mind is a REALLY effective hiding place.
We can spend so much time thinking about what needs to be done that we never acknowledge how we’re actually doing.
We analyze someone’s behavior for HOURS rather than admit how deeply they hurt us.
We obsess over a decision because making it would mean releasing control.
We keep planning what’s next because we’re disappointed with what’s happening NOW.
And we stay so occupied trying to figure everything out that we never bring what’s weighing on us before Jesus.
We can be mentally EXHAUSTED from thinking about our lives without paying attention to what’s happening IN us.
That’s part of the hidden cost of living scattered.
Our bodies are present, but our minds are somewhere else. We’re constantly processing information without processing our experiences. We know everything demanding our attention but lose sight of what deserves it.
The goal isn’t to stop thinking or pretend our responsibilities don’t exist. It’s to recognize when mental activity becomes a substitute for actually dealing with something.
Sometimes we don’t need another plan. We need to acknowledge we’re afraid.
Sometimes we don’t need another opinion. We need to admit we’re hurt.
Sometimes we don’t need to rehearse the conversation again. We need to have it.
A full mind doesn’t always mean we’re facing our lives. Sometimes it’s how we’re avoiding them.
And Jesus loves us too much to leave us disconnected from the places He wants to meet us.
