The idol of control is exhausting.

on July 16, 2025

We don’t usually call it control.
We call it wisdom. Preparedness. Stewardship. Responsibility.
We call it “doing our best.”
But if we’re honest, it’s often fear in disguise—a deep ache to feel safe, secure, certain.
It is usually subtle, roped into the normal everyday rhythms and patterns that you hold, and praised by the world around you, making it hard to detect or label.
But when the plan changes or the detour arrives, we come undone.
Or when the way we THOUGHT things would go shifts…and suddenly, the ground beneath us feels far less dependable than we thought.
Not because we’re weak, but because we’ve placed our peace in something fragile. We think the circumstance is making us weary, but it’s actually the placement of our trust. We know that we know that we KNOW that a circumstance, an outcome, another relationship, or anything temporary simply can’t sustain, especially when tragedy strikes, uncertainty looms, or we become awakened to the reality that nothing is actually in our hands.

But God—
He steps into the unraveling not to shame us, but to free us. To save us. To slow us down and bring us closer. To help us release what’s causing the blisters so we don’t live weary or afraid.
To remind us that His purpose is not just prevailing—it’s better.
It’s kinder.
It’s wiser.
It’s written from a place of perfect love, not panic.
It considers everything and its goal is always transformation. The deep work of the soul that refuses to let idols take His place when He knows they’ll leave us discouraged, dry, deserted, and desperate for His intervention.

So if your plans are falling apart, it doesn’t mean you are.
If the picture you had in your head of how you thought this would go has been hijacked, lean in.
Maybe it means God is gently removing the weight you were never meant to carry.
Not to hurt you—but to hold you.
Not to scare you—but to show you that peace was never meant to be so vulnerable.

The goal was never to be in control.
It was to be deeply, completely held.
And you are.
And God knows. He is really, really good at His job.
