I’ve said the phrase many times. I think we all have. And we’ve certainly been on the receiving end of it too.
It’s said in kindness and honest sincerity:“Let me know if you need anything.”
And most of the time, it really is heartfelt. We WANT to offer relief. We want to help.
But the more I’ve walked through hard seasons—and watched people I love walk through them too—the more I’ve realized something: Sometimes that phrase accidentally places weight back onto the shoulders of the person already drowning.
The truth is, when life is life-ing, most people don’t even KNOW what they need.Grief fogs clarity.Exhaustion scatters your thoughts.Overwhelm makes even simple decisions feel heavy.
And even if they DID know what they needed, many people would rather silently struggle than feel like a burden asking for help.
I think one of the deepest forms of love is learning how to notice without needing someone to fully explain themselves first.
Will your words feel hollow when people are navigating difficult circumstances? Probably.But your presence? Oh, it is felt.You being the hands + feet of Jesus in a practical way? It matters deeply.
Sometimes love sounds less like:“Let me know if you need anything.”
And more like:“Hey, I’m bringing dinner Thursday.”“I’m picking your kids up after school.”“I’m outside with coffee.”“No need to respond. I love you.”
When someone is carrying too much, even asking for help can feel heavy.
This episode wrecked me a little in the best way because it challenged me to ask:Am I offering support that costs me nothing?Am I protecting my comfort more than pursuing connection?Am I asking hurting people to manage the emotional labor of telling me how to love them?
This conversation isn’t about guilt. It’s about awareness. I needed the reminder too.
Jesus never loved from a distance.He stepped into inconvenience, interruption, and messy places.And if we’re going to love like Him, it will probably interrupt us too.
And praise God for that.More of Him, less of us.
